How to Study Effectively by Elon Musk
Before continuing with this article, for those of you who have not read the previous article. Please read the characteristics of intelligent people according to Steve Jobs. Hopefully it will add insight to you.
We continue; why are there people who can quickly master different fields and even succeed in all of them. Meanwhile, I studied only one field, I didn't understand. Let's take Elon Musk for example.
He studied the internet, after that he was able to set up Paypal. He studied transportation technology then he was able to create Hyperlo. He studied renewable energy and he was able to build Tesla. He studied Rocket Science and founded Space-X. Recently, he's even been trying to master biotechnology so he can create Neuralink.
Wow, Elon Musk has broken through many barriers with his proven learning techniques. Not just once, but many times. So, how to study effectively by Elon Musk?
An interesting article was written by Jack Daghe who in his blog mentions that "he has identified the way Elon Musk learns". He called it; Elon Musk's two rules of learning. The first rule is to build a tree of knowledge and the second rule is to connect the branches of knowledge.
Let's discuss the two Rules. It's true that Ellen Musk is a genius, maybe even compared to Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, or Isaac Newton. He has a different way of looking at problems than most entrepreneurs or innovators in general. And of course, he read hundreds of books. He also works with the best in class experts. But that's not really what makes him such a great learner. The learning method is actually not very sophisticated. In fact, the two rules about how to learn faster can be applied by anyone and at any time, including you.
We start with the first rule, which is to build a tree of knowledge. In a conversation on Reddit, Musk discussed his approach to learning and the structure he uses and he said this “it's important to see knowledge as a kind of semantic tree - make sure you understand the basic principles which are trunks and big branches, before you get into the leaves or the details. ". If not, then where will the leaves stick later?
Well, what does that mean for us? We need to understand that not all knowledge is weighed with the same weight or importance. In terms of learning, there is a difference between knowledge that hangs from the branches and knowledge that makes up the base of the tree trunk. Ok, Elon Musk is really good at understanding the core of every business sector he works in and he always starts from there. Makes sure, that he has the best grip on the trunk before he moves to the small part of the branch or leaf.
Many of us do the opposite. We are busy learning technical facts while never fully understanding How or Why they reconnect to the core or trunk. This makes our brains filled with a lot of unnecessary knowledge that can even lead to wrong ways of thinking.
It's like, our learning pattern is like planting a tree with a trunk the size of a toothpick, but it has lots of useless branches. Reasonable, when we try to cram a new idea or a new thought in our brain, the tree falls. If, we want to learn something faster then we have to start with the knowledge that forms a solid stem first. It might be a bit slower at first, but without that solid stem. We may not be able to have a solid foundation that can support further learning or additional skills.
The second rule is to connect the branches of knowledge. This is how Musk was able to reach across multiple sectors and end up disrupting the industry very quickly. He starts with solid roots and solid stems. As he began to expand his knowledge, he began to connect the branches and leaves of that tree with the branches and leaves of other trees. Musk never learns half the information randomly. Everything he learns is linked back to a deeper and more solid foundation of knowledge. Jack Daghe said "most of us are not Master Gardeners but we are twig collectors". We are walking in this life collecting various information from everywhere until our hands are tired of lifting the branch. Over time, we become confused about what to do with this branch. In the end, for some of us, the collection of branches becomes a burden that hinders our lives.
Elon Musk planted trees in fertile Land that grew into a center of rich and abundant learning. Well, you can also do the same. You just need to follow two rules; build the trunk of knowledge first and then work tirelessly to make connections between the branches.
